The Management of the University of Calabar (Unical) says it has noted the statement by the Secretary of the Niger Delta Activists Forum, Comrade Ogar Emmanuel Oko, regarding the general safety of students in hostels, particularly in ‘Malabor’ and Halls 8 and 9.

But the management said in a statement on Tuesday that assure staff, students, parents, guardians and the general public should be assured that the University of Calabar remained safe and secure.

“The welfare and safety of students remain a top priority of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, and the entire University administration.

“As part of Management’s proactive commitment to student welfare, the Chief Security Officer, in collaboration with the Dean of Students’ Affairs, has been directed to further strengthen security operations across all hostels. This includes intensified day and night patrols, enhanced access control at hostel entry points, and the upgrade of surveillance in and around female hostels.

“The University is also collaborating with relevant security agencies to sustain a safe learning and living environment for all.

“Management reiterates that the safety and wellbeing of students is non-negotiable. Any act that threatens the security of students will be treated with utmost seriousness, and appropriate disciplinary and legal actions will be taken in line with university regulations.

“The University is also engaging Hostel Porters, the Student Union Government and Hall Executives to promote vigilance and encourage prompt reporting of any suspicious activity. Students are equally advised to secure their valuables and report any concerns to the security unit promptly.

“The University of Calabar remains fully committed to maintaining an environment that guarantees the safety, dignity and peace of mind of everyone on campus. Management appreciates stakeholders who contribute to the discourse on student welfare and reaffirms that the campus is safe”
